Who is ... Lucas?

Inspiration for the Lucas character came from numerous coworkers through the years, including one who left a little bit of his head cold on my desk.

George Lucas and Kinky Friedman

This came in today's mail bag:

Hi Christian. In your book, the Lucas character with pneumonia tags Star Wars pictures as himself. Is this some veiled goof on George Lucas?

- Tobias Fujiyama (via web site contact form)

Tobias, it’s not George Lucas, but Kinky Friedman's Old Ben Lucas:

Well, old Ben Lucas had a lot of mucus
Coming right out of his nose.
He picked and picked till it made you sick,
But back again it grows.

When it's cotton picking time in Texas,
Boys, it's booger picking time for Ben.
He'd raise that finger mean and hostile
Stick it in that waiting nostril,
Here he comes with a green one once again.

You can find this song on Kinky's Old Testaments & New Revelations album. (My version comes from Last Of The Jewish Cowboys: The Best Of Kinky Friedman)

Inspiration for the Lucas character came from numerous coworkers through the years, all annoying. One of them insisted on meeting with me despite having "walking pneumonia." Another thought I'd appreciate the little drip of head cold he left on my desk. I didn't appreciate that.
